The Saints battled hard, but fell 4-2 to Harvard Friday night. (Jack Lyons) |
Well, last night kinda sucked, and nobody sugar coated it. Harvard is a really good team, and they beat us, but the fact that it was only a two goal game gave me a little hope, because it easily could have been a five goal game. There's still a good team in that locker room, and they get a chance to prove it tonight against a solid team in Dartmouth.
The Big Green stumbled last night against Clarkson losing 4-2, dropping them to 3-4-2. They won't bring the same Spaceball's-esque ludicrous speed that Harvard has, they are a gritty team with experienced players. Corey Kalk and Troy Crema lead the scoring for Dartmouth, with 6 and 5 points each while Devin Buffalo is the clear cut starter in Hanover, going 3-4-2 with a 2.66 GAA and a .908 save percentage. Dartmouth is a middle of the road ECAC team, but unlike three or four years ago, the top-to-bottom strength of the ECAC is much better, and no one, not even Brown or Princeton, can be considered a definite win.
This is a game that St. Lawrence should win. Dartmouth carries a worse power play than the Saints, and their PK is just below 80%. The Big Green spend ample time in the box, so this is an opportunity to get the power play going. It went 0-fer last night and failed to score in a 5-on-3 situation, although it lasted only 28 seconds, hardly enough time to really set up.
The PK can get back on their feet after a rough night last night, but that Harvard power play is filthy, so chalk it up to an off night on the wrong night and move on. The PK has always been solid these last few years, and there's no need to panic over a bad game.
The offense still ground out two goals, despite the speed and possession edge Harvard had. The heart and effort was still present last night, as both goals came on second and third chance opportunities last night. Guys were still crashing the net and grinding in the corner.

Harvard just capitalized on the more-than-usual mistakes the Saints made in their own end. An off night against Harvard, at any time in any building, usually means you're in for a rough one, and that's what happened.
But hey, now it's Saturday, and it brings with it a new opponent for the Saints. Shortly after the women (hopefully) finish dismantling Clarkson to stay undefeated (game starts at 3, be there), the men will take on the Big Green, and if they're up for to the task of playing a full 60 minutes with better execution and some more restraint in the penalty department, they can get two ECAC points
