Men: Colgate

The Saints are on the road this weekend, and tonight they take on the Colgate Raiders. Colgate was expected to be the top team in the ECAC this year, and thus far they hold a 7-3 record, but sit just 1-1 in ECAC play, good for 7th. They do sit 6th in the USCHO poll.
Colgate is the complete package. They have a high powered offense led by the Spink brothers, although Tylor may not play tonight, solid defense, and a goaltender i n Charlie Finn who was a preseason pick for the Mike Richter award. Also, a stalwart defenseman for the Raiders, Mike Borkowski, is done for the year. Even with these losses, Colgate still presents a tough test for the Saints.
Kyle Hayton has proved he can make the saves needed to win games, even against very talented teams like Ferris State and Miami. The Saints have also been scoring goals at a solid clip, outscoring opponents 13-2 in the last three games, which included two shutouts.
Against such a good team as Colgate, St. Lawrence will need to focus on limiting chances. Looking at stats, the Saints have been consistently outshot, but as a team, they like to pick their shots, which contributes to the skew in the category.
Nevertheless, 50 and 42 shots against Miami and 47 against Ferris State doesn't seem like a good recipe for wins. Somewhere in the 30 range makes Hayton's job a lot easier. Forcing the puck to the outside and clogging up the shooting lanes can help alleviate some of the pressure on Hayton to make a bunch of saves.
I have confidence that the Saints will be able to score, though it would be nice to see Gavin Bayreuther get on the score sheet again, something he hasn't done since the Niagara blowout. If they can limit the Colgate shots, they should be able to get a big win in Hamilton.
Game starts at 7, but I'll miss it because the women host Dartmouth at home tonight.
