Women: Clarkson preview

After their dominant sweep of Robert Morris at home, the Saints get back to work after a bit of a break. They'll face the Clarkson Golden Knights at Cheel tomorrow, this time for real, as its their ECAC schedule opener. The teams split their non-conference series, with the home team winning each contest.
The opener went to the Saints 5-3 while Clarkson snagged a win in Potsdam on Erin Ambrose's late power play goal.
The Golden Knights sit at 5-3 and are ranked ninth in the most recent USCHO.com poll, up from tenth the week before. The Saints are 3-2-1, just outside the top ten in the poll.
The Saints played two solid games against Clarkson in their earlier matchup, holding what the dominant offense to five goals in two contests, while scoring six of their own. SLU has been scoring at will of late, led by Brooke Webster, who has 5 goals in 6 games. Jenna Marks is also off to an impressive start in her junior campaign with 6 points in 6 games.
The goaltending situation isn't in question either, with Carmen MacDonald being Carmen MacDonald, and Brooke Wolejko has shown that she is capable of playing well if MacDonald needs a rest.
The Saints will need a fast start if they want to get a win in Potsdam. They haven't played in over a week, while Clarkson last played on Saturday in the second half a home and home series with Syracuse. SLU will be more rested, and should be able to push the pace early on. If they can get an early goal or two and put Clarkson on their heels, they can topple the defending champions again, this time in unfriendly territory.
Key players for the Saints will obviously be MacDonald, as well as Webster and Amanda Boulier. The Saints defense has been excellent this year, allowing more than two goals just once, in the win over Clarkson. They held a potent BC offense to four goals in two games while going 0-1-1. If the Saints can score against the Knights, they can win. No issue.
And, as everyone knows, you need the puck to score. So the key, in addition to a fast start, is puck possession. Clarkson is a good possession team, so SLU needs to win battles and races for loose pucks and win faceoffs. If the Saints control the puck, they can tire out an already more tired Clarkson team, and they should win.
The puck drops at 7:00 at Cheel. I'll try and tweet, but I won't be able to get over to the game.
