Clarkson recap

Last night, the women defeated Clarkson 5-3, beating the Golden Knights in their first game since claiming the national championship.
The game started well for the Saints. Brooke Webster put the Saints up 1-0 early, putting home a rebound off a shot from Amanda Boulier. Webster scored her second of the game, blasting a one timer on the power play that trickled through Clarkson netminder Emily Horn, giving the Saints a 2-0 lead.
SLU would take that lead into the second period, where the Golden Knights quickly cut the lead in half, when Shannon MacAuley tipped a pass past Carmen MacDonald. However, Saints rookie Kennedy Marchment gave SLU the two goal lead again, taking a pass from Abbey McRae and tucked the puck between the pad and the post on a nice wraparound move. Clarkson would change goalies after that goal.
The third period saw the Golden Knights score two quick goals on the power play to even the score. Clarkson had more of the possession in final frame, but MacDonald made some spectacular saves to keep the score even.
Then, with just 2:09 remaining in the game, Jess Hon was able to find a rebound off a Jackie Wand shot, and fit the puck past Shea Tiley to give the Saints the 4-3 lead. The play was reviewed, but the goal stood. Kailee Heidersbach added an empty net goal for good measure, and the Saints marched to victory.
Overall, the Saints looked very strong. They controlled the puck well, played solid defense and didn't give Clarkson a lot of room to operate in the offensive zone.
Both Marchment and Webster had 2 points and MacDonald finished with 32 saves, including 13 in the third period.
The Saints will look to complete the sweep at Clarkson today at 4, and spoil the raising of the 2014 National Champions banner.
