Women: Union and RPI recap

On friday night, the women's team defeated Union 4-0 to complete the season sweep. A two goal game  from Kailee Heidersbach and 23 saves from Carmen MacDonald helped power the Saints to victory.
Kayla Raniwsky opened the scoring 7:03 into the first on the power play, when she redirected a shot-pass from the point.
The second period yielded just one goal as well. Heidersbach netted her first of the game, tapping home a great pass from Rylee Smith to put the Saints up 2-0.
Heidersbach scored her second of the game with a beautiful wrister from the right circle, over Lundberg's shoulder. Dayle Wilkinson scored from a similar area, picking off a pass and going top shelf to put the Saints up 4-0.
Unfortunately, Quinnipiac had a comeback win against Cornell, so the Saints needed a win Saturday, and a Colgate win against the Bobcats, to get home ice.
Saturday saw the Saints defeat RPI in a close game, closing out the regular season on senior night with a 3-2 win. Carmen MacDonald made 28 saves, and both Heidersbach and Raniwsky scored in their second straight game. Mel Desrochers, who was previously tied for the SLU record for most goals in a career for a defensman, set the new record today with her 26th career goal.
Heidersbach opened the scoring for the Saints with 14:53 remaining in the first period. Desrochers scored her record breaking goal roughly five minutes later, when she found a loose puck in forced it home on the power play. After the first, the Saints led 2-0.
RPI scored on a power play in the second period to narrow the Saint lead to one, but SLU soon found themselves on the power play again. With the advantage, Raniwsky managed to work the puck through Kelly O'Brien from essentially the red line, giving the Saints a two goal lead again.
An RPI power play goal in the third brought the Engineers to within one again, but they couldn't complete the comeback.
The Saints locked up the fifth seed in the ECAC playoffs, and will face Quinnipiac in the first round, in Hamden. The Saints went 1-0-1 against the Bobcats in the regular season.
