Women: Princeton recap, Qpac preview

The women concluded their #SaintsgoSocial week last night with an entertaining 2-1 loss to Princeton. No, I didn't win the puck toss competition, nor did I win free SLU stuff by following coach Wells on twitter, but that's not important.
The Saints came out playing well, and recorded the first seven shots on net, but came up empty handed for their efforts. Denna Laing then put PU up 1-0 at 11:31 of the first, beating Carmen MacDonald high blocker from the slot. A late SLU power play gave the Saints exactly what they needed, and they capitalized on the chance. Mel Desrochers found her fellow captain at the top of the slot, and Rylee Smith blasted a slap shot home. The goal was not only her team leading ninth of the season, it was also the 50th of her career. The goal tied the game at 1, and the first period ended that way. I got a free tee shirt in the intermission, bringing the number of free tee shirts I've gotten at a SLU hockey game to three this year. Not bad.
The second period didn't have any scoring, but there were more penalties and abbreviated power plays than I care to count. There were 6 penalties in total in the second period, but 4 of them were within 4 minutes of each other, and my head started to hurt just trying to tweet everything correctly. No one scored on any of them though.
The third period was exciting, as usual, and as the seconds ticked down, SLU worked to kill off a Princeton power play. A shorthanded bid for the Saints was stopped, and resulted in a 2-1 rush for Princeton, which Rose Alleva finished with a one timer from the left circle to put the Tigers up 2-1 with 47.7 seconds left. Even though SLU had a power play chance with 24 seconds left, they were unable to find the net, and fell 2-1, snapping their 3 game ECAC win streak, and 5 game point streak.
Now, they have to rebound quickly, as #8 Quinnipiac comes to Appleton after tying Clarkson 3-3 last night.
Quinnipiac ranks 4th in the ECAC with 2.69 goals per game, and their offense is led by Kelly Babstock, who's 40 points are second in the ECAC behind Jamie Lee Rattray of Clarkson. They have other good scorers too, like Shiann Darkangelo, who has 29 points.
Their offense may be good, but the defense is great, allowing just 1.38 goals per game. SLU has to break that trend today. The Saints and Bobcats already tied 1-1 this year, so the Saints know they can compete with this team, it's just a matter of doing it.
Key player, as usual, is MacDonald. SLu's defense has played well recently, but it still all rests on the play of MacDonald. If she plays well, the team does well, and they'll need her on her game today, as I'm sure she will be.
Puck drop at 3:00.
