Women: The home stretch preview

There are only four games remaining in the regular season for the SLU women, and this weekend presents a challenge, and an opportunity for them. The plot in the ECAC is really beginning to thicken as teams make one final push for points. The top spot in the ECAC is held by Harvard with 30 points, but Cornell is second with 29 points, and right behind the Big Red is Clarkson with 28 points. Those are the three teams in competition for the regular season title, as the next closest team is Quinnipiac with 22 points, followed by St. Lawrence with 21.
Unlike the men, where every team makes the tournament, only the top 8 programs for women get the chance to compete for the ECAC tournament championship. The top four teams get home ice against the bottom four, with the first seed playing the eighth and so on in best of three series. Right now, St. Lawrence would face Quinnipiac in Hamden, but that can certainly change. Captain Mel Desrochers says" We are definitely focused on the upcoming games, but we do look at the standings simply because it's so close, with Princeton two points behind us, and Quinnipiac a point ahead of us". Co-captain Dayle Wilkinson says the players" had a team meeting, and home ice is a goal for us"
SLU's four remaining games are against Harvard, Dartmouth, Union, and RPI. The Saints have a 3-1 record against those four teams, having lost to Harvard 3-2. That game will be a battle between goalies Carmen MacDonald and Emerance Maschmeyer.  It will be tough game, but if the Saints can get any sort of points out of it,
For the time being, the team is focused on improving to challenge for home ice. "We've been working on the transition game, and making sure that we get quality scoring chances, instead of simply throwing the puck to the net" says Wilkinson.
Meanwhile, Quinnipiac, the team SLU will look to overtake for home ice advantage, has its final four games against Yale, Colgate, Cornell, and Brown. Of those four, only Yale and Cornell are in playoff position, and Cornell has been a power house for much of the season. There is a good chance that when the regular season ends, SLU will have home ice for the first round, most likely against Quinnipiac.
The Saints open the last four games Friday at Dartmouth, a 7:00 PM puck drop, before heading to Harvard on Saturday for a showdown with the Crimson at 4:00 PM.
