Women: Harvard recap

Last night, the women's team showed perseverance when trailing by two goals, but ultimately fell to Harvard 5-2. The score isn't indicative of the play, as Harvard recorded two empty net goals late in the third.
Two early goals in the first gave the Crimson the lead, but SLU would not go away. They put constant pressure on Harvard, but Emerance Maschmeyer was up to the task.
The lead would hold for Harvard through the second period and into the third.
In the third period, SLU's fortunes changed. An early power play provided the Saints with the chance they needed to get back in the game.  Brooke Webster found a rebound off a Kailee Heidersbach shot, and forced it home to bring the Saints within one. 28 seconds later, Ellie Williams potted the tying goal, firing home a rebound from a Mel Desrochers shot. 28 seconds and the game was tied. That's the type of heart that will take this team through the playoffs.
Unfortunately, Harvard was able to get a power play goal, roughly 4 minutes later, and although the Saints put 22 shots on net in the third, they were unable to beat Maschemeyer again.
The Saints now sit 2 points behind Quinnipiac for the last home ice spot in the ECAC first round, and have their last two games at home next weekend against RPI and Union, two teams they already beat this year.  The Saints will need to get wins against both teams, and hope that Quinnipiac stumbles against either Cornell or Colgate, and there is a good chance Cornell will beat them.
If the Saints can show the type of heart and work ethic they displayed last night against Harvard, there may just be some playoff hockey at Appleton Arena this year.
