Syracuse recap

In the final non ECAC game of the year, the women were shut out by Syracuse tonight, 3-0.
'Cuse opened the scoring when Allie LaCombe found a rebound and got it past Guilia Mazzochi inside the post. Despite the early goal, the Saints seemed to stabilize, and play a solid all around game.  They outshot the Orange 37-20, which generally indicates that a team maintained good puck possession time.  The Syracuse goaltender was just up to the task. The Saints trailed by one for much of the game, but when a SLU pass was picked off, Cara Johnson capitalized by beating Mikaela Thompson. Thompson and Mazzochi split the game, and made a combined 17 saves. Syracuse sealed the win with an empty netter by Johnson.
All in all, I wouldn't set much store in this game. This is no disrespect to Syracuse, but I would think that the minds of the players and coaches are much more fixed on this weekends games than tonight. That being said, the Saints always play hard, and did tonight.  I like what I see in the stats, although maybe a power play goal on one of the 5 chances they had would have changed the complexion of the game. Dayle Wilkinson did have a bit of bad luck, ringing a post on a 5 on 3 early in the third, and had that gone in, maybe the game turns out slightly different. But it didn't, and now SLU has to refocus on the weekend. I guess, if they want to take anything away from this game, its that they now know what it feels like to have to play against Carmen MacDonald: nothing gets past her.
The women are back in action on Friday, when they return home and host Princeton, before their 3:00 battle with Quinnipiac on Saturday.
