Men: Quinnipiac recap

Once again, the Saints found a way to beat Quinnipiac. It was one of the hardest fought hockey games they've played this year, and they definitely deserved the win.
Matt Peca opened the scoring for the Bobcats 18:10 into the first, when a QU shot rang off the post. He found the puck in front of the net, and lifted it over Matt Weninger's glove, who was sprawled on the ice trying to make the save. The Saints weren't demoralized by the goal, but rather, played a strong period, and went into the locker room for the intermission trailing by just one.
The second period was friendlier to the Saints. Midway through the middle frame the Saints were on the power play. Jeremey Wick sent the puck behind the net and around the boards to the left point, where Gavin Bayreuther picked it up, and spun quickly, ripping a shot on net that flat out beat Michael Garteig, and tied the game at 1. The second period ended in the 1-1 tie.
QU came out fast in the third period, and Bryce Van Brabant was able to put the Bobcats up 2-1. He found a rebound in front of Weninger and beat him five hole on the power play.  Again, the Saints would not go away, and put on pressure for much of the period. At 14:32 of the third, Brian Ward finished off a dandy of a passing play between Alex Dahl and Drew Smolcysnki with a shot that beat Garteig high blocker and tied the Saints. It was Ward's second of the weekend. Just over a minute later, SLU was on the power play, and a Greg Carey shot bounced off of Justin Baker and trickled over the goal line, and SLU took a late 3-2 lead.
Despite taking 3 penalties in the final 5 minutes of the game, SLU was able to kill them all off, quite a feat for a team that has struggled to kill penalties at any point in a game, to hold on for the victory.
Matt Weninger recorded 31 saves in the game, several of them being game savers, including a great leg save on Travis St. Denis. The Saints have now won three straight at Quinnipiac, including spoiling their 21 game win streak a year ago.
The Saints are back in action next weekend at home against Harvard and Dartmouth.
