Men: Princeton recap, Qpac preview

Well that's refreshing.  A SLU game ended in a 7-1 score, and this time, the Saints were the ones scoring. What's even better is that only Pat Doherty had more than one goal, meaning 6 players scored a goal. No, Greg Carey didn't, so he's still riding a 7 game goalless streak, but the guys who really weren't scoring did, guys like Gunnar Hughes, and Doherty, which is refreshing.
Doherty opened the scoring 5 minutes into the first, when he tipped in Gavin Bayreuther's shot on the power play. The first period ended with Doherty tally as the difference.
The second period was the big one for the Saints, where the scored 4 goals and put Princeton to bed. Doherty scored his second of the game, the eventual game winner, as he took a Hughes pass and deked Colton Phinney in front of the net to put SLU up 2-0. Ryan Siiro brought Princeton within one, but a Justin Baker one timer put SLU back up by two. Matt Carey put the Saints up by 3 on the power play late in the second.
Three Saints goals in the third period just added insult to injury for a struggling Princeton team.  Woody Hudson, Gunnar Hughes, and Brian Ward all scored to seal a solid win for SLU. Weninger made 24 saves for his eighth win of the year. Doherty's three point night gets him the number one star from me, but I'm also happy for him because he played so well last weekend, but didn't score. He deserves the goals he scored, and probably could have had more.
Now, the men make the trip to Hamden, CT to play Quinnipiac. The Saints went 0-1-1 against Yale, the defending national champion, but have yet to play the Bulldog's opponent in that game.  That changes today. The Saints are definitely feeling good after their win against the Tigers, but Quinnipiac isn't exactly Princeton; they're a lot better.  They have a myriad of offensive threats, from Connor and Kellen Jones, to Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Travis St. Denis. And don't forget their leading scorer, the freshman Sam Anas. The Saints will have to play defense like they did against Union, or this could get out of hand the way the Colgate game did.
Just as important as the defense and goalie are tonight is Greg Carey. He is the Saints leading scorer, and a Hobey Baker contender, but the guy hasn't scored in 7 games. In those 7 games, the Saints are 2-4-1. Against a team like the Bobcats, who can beat you in all three phases of the game, when your best player doesn't put the puck in the net, getting a win will be pretty darn tough. Carey fired 10 shots on net last night though, so maybe tonight, the night we need him most, he'll break out of the slump.
Puck drop at 7:00
