Women's recap, Colgate preview

I've been to lots of NHL playoff games, even Stanley Cup finals games, but last night's game against Cornell ranks up there with game 7 between Boston and Toronto as one of the most entertaining games i've ever attended. St. Lawrence entered the game having been winless in their last 8 games, with 7 losses and 1 tie.  They played probably their best overall game of the year, holding an incredibly potent Cornell offense to just one goal.
SLU opened the scoring 12:23 into the first period, when Jenna Marks found herself alone in the slot, and fired the puck top shelf glove side for her first goal of the year. SLU carried that lead deep into the third period, thanks to some great defense, and an unbelievable game by Carmen MacDonald. There were at least 5 times where the puck was loose in the SLU crease, and either MacDonald managed to rob a Cornell players, or a SLU skater cleared the puck. In one instance, the puck was on the goal line, but before a Cornell player could reach it, Kailee Heidersbach swooped in to pull the puck off the line, and into the corner, without a doubt saving a goal.
The 1-0 Saint lead would last almost 15 minutes into the third period, but at 14:01 of the third, Hanna Bunton fired the puck across the SLU crease, and it ricocheted off a SLU defenders leg, and trickled over the line on the far post. That easily could have been a back breaker for the Saints, but they rallied, and walked away with a very well deserved tie against the 4th ranked team nationally.
The Saints can definitely take a lot of positives away from that game, and gain a lot of momentum into todays game against Colgate, a team SLU already defeated 3-0 this year. Colgate enters this afternoons game at 2-11 in ECAC play, and 5-18-2 overall. This is a mismatch on paper, but so was the Brown game, at SLu lost 4-2 in that contest. SLU seemed to find their game last night, and although it would be nice to see MacDonald to have to make 51 saves, she has proved this year that she can handle a heavy workload.
SLU's power play has struggled, put the PK and even strength offense have been fine. As long as the Saints continue to work the puck through Mel Desrochers on the point, their 2.1 goals per game average should continue to hold steady.
Once again, the key to this game is MacDonald, and her play in net. I have absolute confidence in her ability to stop whatever Colgate throws at her, especially if the trend of 1.64 goals per game by Colgate continues.
It's imperative that the Saints don't take Colgate lightly. The Red Raiders are a team with a lot of talent, but they're desperate for wins now, having lost 5 in a row. And, 4 of their 5 wins have come on the road. The Saints need to bring the intensity all game, and maybe get a goal or two early, and make sure to carry the momentum from last night into today.
Puck drops at 3, and I'll be there.
