Women's: Colgate recap

Finally, after almost two months, the St. Lawrence women's hockey team takes two points from a game. Goals from Margo Lund, Rylee Smith, and Kailee Heidersbach, along with 21 saves from Carmen MacDonald, propelled the Saints to victory.
Colgate opened the scoring at 10:29 of the first on the power play, as MacDonald was beat from the slot by a wristshot. SLU took control from there on, and Margo Lund collected a rebound in front of the Colgate net and fired it home to tie the game. It was her first of the season.
The second period was entertaining, with lots of good chances for both teams, including an opportunity for Jenna Marks, who fired a shot just wide of an almost completely open net.
Much like last game, the tie lasted deep into the third period, but in between goals, SLU had to withstand some tough Colgate pressure. At one point, Head Coach Chris Wells called a timeout, and brought his team into the hallway. Whatever he said, it worked.
At 3:01 of the third, Rylee Smith scored her 49th career goal, and broke the tie that lasted almost 45 minutes. Kailee Heidersbach added an empty net goal to put the Saints up 3-1, and seal the win.
This is the best weekend of hockey the Saints played since the Quinnipiac and Princeton weekend, where the Saints took 3 points in a tie against the Bobcats and a 4-1 win over the Tigers. The defense stepped up and worked hard in their zone, especially when it came to poke checks. I saw a lot of great stick work from every player.  The Saints also blocked a lot of shots, something that is always important.
The Saints go back on the road next weekend, playing Union and RPI, and will look to continue their recent stretch of solid play.
