SLU drops #4 Union

In perhaps their best game of the year, the St. Lawrence men upset the 4th ranked Union Dutchmen 2-1. The Saints got goals from freshmen Drew Smolcysnki and Mike Graham, and 22 saves from Matt Weninger to beat Union.
The Saints came out fast against Union, and although they didn't score in the first period, they absolutely outplayed Union.
In the second period, the Saints again outplayed the Dutchmen, and had quite a few scoring chances. Just past the 13 minute mark of the period, Drew Smolcysnki found himself in the slot on a partial break. He brought the puck to his forehand, and pulled a little shake and bake, moving the puck to his backhand before roofing a backhander over Colin Stevens' arm.
The third period started with a quick 4 on 4, before an abbreviated Union power play. Daniel Carr capitalized on a one timer chance and tied the game for Union.
SLU regained control of the game quickly, and continued to bring pressure for much of the third period. With 8:40 left in the game, Mike Graham found himself wide open just off of the right faceoff circle. Jeremy Wick found him with a pass, and Graham blasted it home top shelf to put SLU on top. His first career college goal also turned out to be the game winner, and the Saints stole two points from a Union team who looked absolutely devastated at the end of the game.
The Saints finally got back on track with this game, as they had gone winless since they're victory against North Dakota in Grand Forks on November 29th. It was one of their best games of the year, and should be able to carry the momentum against RPI tomorrow.
