RMU game one recap

The women's team started their new year off with a tough game against #10 Robert Morris University, who entered the game riding a 9 game win streak, which they extended to ten against St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence, meanwhile, dropped to 6-10-1.
RMU opened the scoring just 1:01 into the game, on Rebecca Vint's tenth goal of the season. St. Lawrence drew even when Mel Desrochers blasted her seventh goal of the season past Jessica Dodds. Assists went to Dayle Wilkinson and Kayle Raniwsky. The first period ended with this same score.
Through much of the second period, SLU was severely outshot, but the play of Carmen MacDonald kept them tied.  The Colonials were able to score two goals in the final 4 minutes of the second to take a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Late in the third, St. Lawrence had a 5 on 3 down by two goals, and they pulled their goalie to make it a 6 on 3. RMU was able to hit the empty net, giving them a 4-1 lead.  Although Alex Moore was able to score a power play goal, her sixth of the season, with MacDonald pulled, St. Lawrence fell 4-2.
Overall, St. Lawrence couldn't stop RMU's offense, which I thought was the most important thing.  They did block a lot of shots, but Carmen MacDonald still had to face 33 shots, stopping 30 of them.  The empty net goal on the power play was a tough break, but had it gone the other way, this was a totally different game. That being said, it looks on the stat sheet like they put up a solid fight against a very good team that's now riding a ten game winning streak.  Getting a win tomorrow will be great for the team, but even another strong showing will be good for their confidence as they head into next weekends series against a really good ECAC team in Clarkson.
Puck drop tomorrow is at 3:00 PM.
