Men's: Cornell recap, Colgate preview

Last night, the men faced the 12th ranked Cornell Big Red, and, as has been the norm for the last few weeks, they found themselves trailing early, having given up two goals in the first 4:14 of the game. This time, however, SLU has able to battle back for a tie.
Cornell opened the scoring 1:36 into the game on Dustin Mowrey's goal, and then Cornell took a 2-0 lead on Christian Hilbrich's goal. Greg Carvel took a timeout to try and regroup his players, and it worked. Brian Ward potted his sixth of the season off a three on one, and Alex Dahl went top shelf to beat Andy Iles, finishing a pass from his longtime teammate Eric Sweetman, whom he also played with in the USHL with Youngstown.  It was Dahl's second of the year. A SLU giveaway late in the period gave Cornell a 3-2 lead in the final seconds of the first.
The Saints came out fast in the second, and Jeremy Wick tipped in Greg Carey's shot on the power play to tie the game at 3. The tie would last late into the second, before Brian Ferlin put Cornell up again 4-3.
SLU had good chances throughout the third period, and their hard work, determination, and desire payed off when the brothers Carey combined to bring the Saints even on the power play. Gunnar Hughes also got an assist on the play.
Matt Weninger made 29 saves in the tie, including a penalty shot chance for the Big Red.
Just like the women, the men need to bring the momentum gained from a well played game into tonights tilt against Colgate, a team they lost to 5-3 earlier. In fact, that game marked the beginning of the recent rough patch for the Saints. The Red Raiders a 12-9-3 overall, and 8-3-1 in the ECAC.
For the Saints, Greg Carey is riding an 18 game point streak, and that will need to be stretched to 19, along with production from his brother.  When both the Carey's have good games, it't pretty tough to beat SLU, as long as the defense plays well, and from what I can tell, they played a lot better last night. It will take a performance much like the one last night against Cornell, but if they can reproduce that effort, they should be able to get a win.
The defense needs to focus on stopping Colgate's brothers, Tyson and Tylor Spink. In fact, this game may just be won by whichever brother duo can outplay the other. It will be a heck of a game, and I will be watching most of the live stream tonight.
Puck drops at 7.
