Men: Colgate recap

Following a hard working 4-4 tie against Cornell on Friday, the men dropped to Colgate 7-3 on Saturday. Just another ugly game for a Saint team that has struggled to keep the puck out their net.
Much like Friday night, Colgate jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Saints battled back to tie it up on goals from Drew Smolcynski and Gavin Bayreuther. And, much like the Cornell game, Colgate took a 3-2 lead late in the first. Unfortunately, thats where the similarities end.
Kyle Baum gave Colgate a 4-2 lead on the power play, the only goal during the second period.
Two goals less than 4 minutes apart in the middle of the third period put Gate up 6-2, and although SLU would tally a power play goal from Woody Hudson with 6 minutes to play, they gave up a shorthanded goal shortly thereafter to sink themselves.
Once again, SLU was simply unable to contain the opponents best players, as the Spink twins recorded five points, four of which were Tyson's. Kyle Baun also had two goals, and Spiro Goulakos had two assists. It was the same thing in the Brown game, a 5-3 loss where Lorito, Lappin, and Naclerio all recorded a goal and an assist each, at least. The inability to stop the other teams top players leaves the Saints almost no chance to win games, unless they can put up 4 or 5 goals, which has been increasingly hard for them to do as the competition gets harder. That isn't a knock on the offense, as they score consistently, and the power play has always been great for them, except for maybe their five on three, which baffles me, but regardless, the offense can't be blamed. As long as the team as a whole struggles defensively, I wouldn't expect to much, unless there's an offensive explosion. The Cornell game was a great for St. Lawrence, but the 'Gate game was a big step backwards. Next week against Union and RPI will be a good way to tell how the rest of this season will play out for the young, but immensely talented Saints.
