Yale Preview

Well, its here.  Tonight marks the first game in the ECAC for the Saints this year, it just so happens that tonights opponent, the Yale Bulldogs, are the defending national champions.  Last year only Union and Colgate scored more goals per game than Yale, but their leading scorer, Andrew Miller signed with Edmonton, leaving just Kenny Agostino to lead the offense. As a result, they have only scored four goals in two regular season games, after scoring nine against Ontario IT. SLU's defense has not been fantastic this year, allowing 20 goals in 6 games, but the Saints have been putting the puck in the back of the net, scoring 23 goals, led by Matt Carey, who has four to lead the team.
For SLU, I think the key will be to capitalize on their power play opportunities.  Right now the Saints are scoring on 23.3% of their power plays, a very good pace so far, while Yale is killing just 70% of their penalties. And Yale's goalie is young and untested, so the more shots and pressure SLU puts on him, the better the chances are that we'll score goals.  However, Yale has only played two games, so these numbers are not much of an indication.  If SLU can get some power play goals tonight, I think they should be able to spoil Yale's championship banner unveiling night.
This game tonight will be a really good measuring stick for SLU in the ECAC, because Yale is one of the stronger teams in conference.  If they can get a win tonight, they face a slightly weaker team in Brown tomorrow, and could easily come out of the first weekend of ECAC play with a sweep.
