Women's: Mercyhurst game 1 recap

The first of a two game midweek series between the St. Lawrence women's hockey team and a traditionally strong Mercyhurst team looked to be going well for the Saints, as they found themselves up 2 goals midway through the second period.  Mercyhurst came storming back with three unanswered goals to take the first game 3-2.
A scoreless first period would see St. Lawrence land just 3 shots on net, while Carmen MacDonald continued her strong play, making 13 saves in the opening frame.  Each team failed to capitalize on a power play opportunity.
If the first period was less than thrilling, the second period made up for it.  St. Lawrence scored a power play goal only 2:10 into the game, as Mel Desrochers netted her 6th goal of the year, from Abbey McRae and alex Moore.  Later that period, another defenseman, Kirsten Padalis, notched her third of the year on the power play, with assists to Brooke Webster and Kayla Raniwsky.  SLU seemed to be in control with a two goal lead halfway through the game.  But they don't call a two goal lead the worst lead in hockey for no reason.  Later in the second, 15:55 in, Christie Cicero scored for the Lakers on the power play to narrow the Saints lead to one.  The second period wold end with the same score.
The third period would be the decisive one, and the Saints were on the losing end.  Mercyhurst tied the game 9:44 in on another power play goal, this time from Kathy Donohue.  The deadlock lasted for more than nine minutes before Christie Cicero scored her second of the game, which would turn out to be the game winner.
Of the five goals scored, 4 were with the extra skater.  SLU went 2-for-5 on the power play, while Mercyhurst was 2-for-7.  MacDonald made 37 saves in the loss for the Saints, a game where all three freshman recorded points for SLU.
St. Lawrence plays their final game of 2013 today in matinee action, a rematch between the Saints and Mercyhurst.  Puck drops at 3:00.
