Three's all around

After tying defending national champions Yale on Friday, SLU tied Brown on Saturday, again with a score of 3-3.  Brown opened the scoring moments after a successful SLU PK, when defensemen Matt Wahl got a snap shot past Weninger, who was screened on the play.  But freshman Gavin Bayreuther continued his red hot start when he snapped a shot from the point past Brown goalie Tyler Steel while SLU had a man advantage.  Assists went to Justin Baker and Greg Carey.
The tie didn't last long, as Garnet Hathaway picked up a loose puck and went top shelf to put Brown ahead again.  But that lead didn't last long either, as Greg Carey brought SLU even with a power play goal of his own.  He went bar down with a wrister assisted by his brother and Bayreuther.  Towards the end of the first, Greg Carey put a shot on net, and after a quick bunch of chances, Matt Carey was able to bury his fifth goal of the season, to lead the team in that category.
The goalies then took over the game, keeping it scoreless until Brown managed to tie the game lat in the second on a power play, even though SLU was able to kill the 5 on 3 that had just expired. The game was scoreless for the rest of the game, and both goalies made some huge saves to keep it so.
My take: Weninger made 33 saves last night, after making 34 the night before.  That's a lot of activity, and taking that type of porous defense into games against teams like Quinnipiac or Harvard is a recipe for a loss.  But, that being said, with three freshman starters, as they get more mature, they should get better defensively to go along with the offensive flair they've provided, especially Bayreuther.
Also, the power play, which I said was the key to the game, looked good last night, scoring on two of three opportunities, while the PK killed four of five chances, including a five on three.  As special teams improve, if thats possible in the case of the power play, the experience of the defensemen and goalies should make SLU a better even strength team. And i'll go back to my preseason predictions and say again, this team is NCAA tournament team, and I think even more people are starting to realize it.
SLU takes on Dartmouth and Harvard next weekend on the road.
