SLU ties Yale in ECAC opener

In the first game of the year against an ECAC opponent, SLU tied Yale 3-3.  Last time St. Lawrence played Yale, they were swept by the Bulldogs in the second round of the ECAC tournament.  Last night was a little different. The Saints took a lead on Woody Hudson's shot that bounced in off a Yale player's skate and beat Alex Lyon.  Then, Greg Carey took the puck away and skated in to score his first goal in four games, a considerable slump for a player who scored 28 goals last year.  Perhaps that goal will get him back on track, which would be huge for the Saints.
But, as has become pretty much the status quo for the Saints, there two goal lead became just a one goal lead when Jesse Root scored late in the first.
Justin Baker scored early in the second to make in 3-1, but Yale started to dominate play, and scored two goals to send the game to OT.  Yet another two goal lead blown, but they managed to get away with a tie.
Matt Weninger played a great game, making 34 saves on 37 shots, to keep SLU in the game once Yale started to bring the pressure.  Woody Hudson scored his second goal of the year, and both Carey's found the scoresheet, Greg with a goal and an assist, and Matt with an assist.
My take: just from the statistics, SLU took way to many penalties against an offense first team, something they can't afford to do.  They did capitalize on one of three power play opportunities, which I thought was important coming in to the game.  But, from what i've heard, SLU did a great job matching the speed of Yale, and overall, looked very good, despite the blown lead.  As SLU's rookies get more mature on ice, the team should get even more dangerous.
SLU plays Brown tonight at 7:00, looking to get their first ECAC win.
