Late surge falls just short, SLU drops game two

After a solid 5-2 win on Friday, St. Lawrence fell short of the weekend sweep of the University of North Dakota with a 3-2 loss on Saturday.  The players of North Dakota held a players only meeting after the loss on Friday, and when that happens, the team usually responds with a lot of fire on the ice, as was the case Saturday.
UND opened the scoring in the first period at 12:10 when, with the Saints on the power play, Ross McMullan couldn't control the puck at the point, and Rocco Grimaldi took off on a shorthanded breakaway.  He deked to the backhand, and Matt Weninger took the bait, sliding to his left, which left Grimaldi with an open net on his forehand. The period would end with UND holding on to that 1-0 lead.
The second period was mostly dominated by St. Lawrence, and at 10:07 Gunnar Hughes was able to deflect a shot from Justin Baker that was going wide, into the net to even SLU with UND.  That score held until the final 65 seconds of the middle period, when UND scored two quick goals on Weninger, 31 seconds apart, from Gaarder on the power play and Pattyn, to give North Dakota a two goal edge.
The Saints again came out firing on all cylinders to begin the third period, and when Greg Carey took a pass from Chris Martin near the top of the right circle, he wasn't going to miss.  He took to steps towards the net and ripped a shot over Zane Gothberg, a Boston Bruins prospect, to narrow the UND lead to just one with 14: 23 to play.  Although SLU had several golden opportunities, including an essentially open net for Patrick Doherty with about 4 minutes left, the Saints couldn't tie it up, and had to settle for a weekend split.
The power play, which was so potent last night, could get nothing working tonight, and went 0-3, and gave up the shorthanded goal to Grimaldi.  The penalty kill was strong once again, killing 5 of 6 penalties.
SLU returns to the North Country next weekend.  They'll play Clarkson on Friday at Cheel arena in Potsdam, before coming home to Appleton for a home game against the Golden Knights.  I'll be in attendance at both games.
