A goal here, a goal there, a goal everywhere!

If you didn't know any better, you would think the SLU-Dartmouth game last night was baseball. But, the 8-5 score in favor of the Saints was actually hockey.  Maybe the two game misconducts dished out to Woody Hudson and Eric Sweetman are the most surprising part of the game last night though, its been a while since I've seen two to one team on different plays.
Anyway, Dartmouth opened the scoring on the first 5 minute power play, after Hudson's hit from behind.  Crazily enough, thats the first lead Big Green have had all year, but that same power play, Patrick Doherty got a breakaway shorthanded and beat Charles Grant to even it at 1.  Josh Hartley also scored on the power play to make it 2-1 Dartmouth, but when Eric Sweetman's shot bounced off Chris Martin's leg and was tipped into the net by Matt Carey late in the first, the floodgates opened for SLU, and they scored 3 second period goals.
Matt Carey scored 4:03 into the second, and Doherty added his second of the game just 16 seconds later to make it 4-2 SLU. Brett Patterson scored to bring Dartmouth within one, but Gunnar Hughes scored his first of the year soon thereafter to make the margin 2 again.
Gunnar scored again 11:47 into the third, his second of the year and the game, and then Matt Carey scored a power play goal of his own to make it 7-3 Saints, and earn himself his first career collegiate hat trick.  The game was pretty much over here, even though Dartmouth added two goals late in the third, before Greg Carey was able to snipe the open net as Grant made his way to the bench to ice the victory.  SLU improved to 6-2-2 on the year, and 2-0-2 in the ECAC, remaining undefeated in the conference.
What I take away from the game: Yeah, we scored 8 goals, and that's pretty darn awesome, but allowing 5 at the same time is still cause for concern.  When you're leading 7-3, you should be playing defensively, so letting those two late goals in was not good.  Still, its a young team, and anytime you get scored on 5 times and still win, its nice.
Next weekend SLU returns home to face Colgate and Cornell.  I will not be at the Colgate game on Friday, I'll be in Ottawa for the Bruins game.  I'll send a tweet out closer to game time letting everyone know again, in case you count on me for updates.
