Season thoughts so far

Ill have a Ferris State review up once I see the highlights, but I wanted to write this because of how happy I am with the way the season has gone so far.  Yes, we lost a game, but 3-1-0 is a solid start to a season with a lot of questions that needed to be answered.  And so far, all the questions have been answered.
Replacing Flanagan: The team could never replace an All America like Flanagan, but finding a player to fill his shoes wasn't as hard as everyone thought.  The new top line center came in the form of Matt Carey, the little brother of Greg Carey.  His brotherly chemistry may not be the same as the chemistry between Kyle and Greg, but sometimes, a little brotherly love is all thats needed.  Carey has a goal and an assist in four games, which isn't a flashy stat line, but the line itself has 12 points in the season.

Replacing Hughes: George Hughes is another All America lost to graduation, and his presence on the blue-line needed to be replaced.  One player hasn't been able to do it, but two have.  Freshmen Gavin Bayreuther and Eric Sweetman have combined for three goals and two assists.  Good enough so far.

Scoring behind Carey: For much of last year, scoring was hard to find other than Greg Carey.  This year has been slightly different.  Carey has two goals, his brother has one, and linemate Jeremy Wick has one, while Brian Ward leads the team with 3.  Drew Smolcynski scored twice in his debut, and Woody Hudson scored in the loss to Ferris State.  Patrick Doherty has also scored, along with the Sweetman and Bayreuther.  In other words, goal scoring has been spread out, a good sign for the Saints.

Freshman: This year welcomed a class of 11 freshman, and already five have scored goals.  Smolcynski and Bayreuther have two goals, and Hudson, Carey, and Sweetman all have one.  Sweetman and Bayreuther are both playing top 6 defensive roles, and time on the power play.  Alex Dahl is playing on the top PK pair with junior Gunnar Hughes., and first year, but technical sophomore, Matt Carey is centering the top line.
All in all, this has been a good first four games for the Saints, and they take on the Northeastern Huskies next weekend, both games at Appleton.
