SLU dropped their second straight game last night to Northeastern, 6-3. SLU opened the scoring on freshman Drew Smolcynski's third goal of the year, a shot from in front of the net that slipped in between the pad and post. SLU took the lead into the second where Alex Hagen scored his first career goal on a tip from a shot/pass from Matt Carey. SLU had a two goal lead on the board near the end of the second period, but anyone will tell you, a two goal lead is the worst lead in hockey. Ryan Belonger started the comeback at 16:05 of the second, before Kevin Roy tied the game on a power play.
Northeastern came out in the third guns blazing and made it 3-2, but Matt Carey was able to tie it again on the power play for SLU, capitalizing on a great passing sequence with him, Justin Baker, and Gavin Bayreuther.
Then the Huskies took over scoring three goals in the final 5 minutes of the game, including an empty netter to seal their comeback.
The loss by SLU is the second time in two games they have blown a two goal lead and lost, the first being last Saturday against Ferris State. As far as defense goes, Matt Weninger may be good, but he's not superman. He needs support, and right now he's not getting it. The defense has looked slow, getting beat in a lot of races to the puck, and in general, players looked out of position in the defensive zone. Weninger was actually prevented from sliding across the crease by a SLU player, which lead to the goal that gave NU the lead for good.
As rough as the loss was, there were certainly some bright spots, including Alex Hagen's first career goal. Smolcynski scored his third in as many games, and Matt Carey upped his goal total on the power play.
SLU plays Northeastern again tonight at Appleton at 7:00 PM, and look to get back in the win column.
