Maine recap

The Saints opened the regular season last night at Appleton in the first of two home games against the University of Maine, and the Saints emerged with a 3-1 win.  Freshman defenseman Gavin Bayreuther opened the scoring in the first period, his second goal this year, including his power play goal from the exhibition game against Carleton.  Blaine Byron brought Maine even with his goal in the second, but SLU retook the lead on Patrick Doherty's goal.  This would go on to be the game winner, but SLU got an insurance goal from Brian Ward.
My thoughts: Alot has been said about who would replace Flanagan and George Hughes, and how the freshman would handle the pressure.  Its only been two games, one in the regular season, but Matt Carey looks very comfortable on the top line with his brother and Wick.  Is he Flanagan? No, but can he get the job done.  I certainly think so, but there isn't much evidence yet.  And as for the freshman, Eric Sweetman is playing the point on the powerplay and his on the right side of the top pair along with  Justin Baker, and has already recorded an assist.  And Gavin Bayreuther looks very confident, scoring a goal in each of his first two games, including the power play tally against Carleton.  Alex Dahl is killing penalties on the top PK pair with junior Gunnar Hughes, so as far as I can see, Carvel has confidence in the their abilities, and so do the players.  If they can keep up the good play remains to be seen, but if they do, this SLU team will surprise alot of people with a tournament appearance at least.
SLU plays Maine again tonight at 7:00 PM, looking to improve to 2-0.
