Ferris State recap

Friday night, St. Lawrence came back from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 over Ferris State.  FSU jumped out to the lead quickly on goals from Justin Buzzeo and Justin DeMartino, but SLU came storming back.  When Alex Hagen fired a shot on net from the hashmarks, Drew Smolcynski was able to bang home the rebound for the first goal of his collegiate career.  SLU drew even with the Bulldogs on Brian Ward's goal, and then Smolcynski struck again.  After a SLU faceoff win, the Saints went hard to the net with the puck, and Smolcynski was able to put home the puck into an essentially open net.  When the final buzzer sounded, SLU improved to 3-0-0 on the season.
Saturday was a different story.  Nine minutes in, Eric Sweetman fed Brian Ward a pass, and Ward carried the puck from the SLU defensive zone, over the Ferris blue line, cut the middle, and fed Sweetman who ripped a shot from the top of the circles that hit the post and went in.  Just 30 seconds into the second period, Matt Carey scored his first of the year.  Greg Carey passed the puck to Jeremy Wick in the SLU zone, and he carried it deep into Ferris' end, before sending the puck Matt Carey's way.  Carey toe dragged around a falling Ferris player, then went bar down to give SLU a 2-0 lead.  However, a power play goal by Garrett Thompson, set up by a beautiful slap pass from Justin Buzzeo from the point, sparked a Ferris comeback that resulted in five unanswered Bulldog goals, three of which were power play goals.  Woody Hudson's goal with 1:30 left in the third was not enough to inspire SLU to a comeback of their own, and the Saints fell 5-3.
In the two game series, Matt Carey, Smolcynski, Hudson, and Sweetman all scored their first collegiate goals.  However, SLU scored only one goal on 10 power play opportunities, and successfully killed only seven of 10 FSU power plays.  Neither of these statistics are good enough, and should be the major concern for the team moving forward.
Goalie Matt Weninger had a tough night on Saturday, but his defense was less than stellar that night, and he faced a lot of shorthanded situations.  There shouldn't be any concern with his play.
SLU plays the Northeastern Huskies next Friday and Saturday, both games at Appleton, starting at 7:00
