Although the current roster had an average year, missing the NCAA tournament, and losing to the eventual national champion Yale Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the ECAC tournament, alumni of the St. Lawrence hockey program had a very successful year. Two former Saints had their names engraved on Lord Stanley's Cup. The Finals featured two Saints on the ice, Rich Peverley for the Boston Bruins, and Brandon Bollig for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Bollig, who turned pro after the 2009-2010 campaign, played in two games in the Stanley Cup finals, accumulating more than 23 minutes of ice time and posting a -1 plus/minus rating.
Teddy Dent, a former center for the Skating Saints, and head coach of the Blakhawks AHL affiliate, the Rockford Ice Hogs, also had his name put on the Stanley Cup. Dent is one of four former Saints who have won the Cup twice, joining Bill torrrey, Ron Waske, and Ray Shero. Dent also won the cup as a coach with the Blackhawks in 2010.
The aforementioned Shero won the award for general manager of the year, after making several key acquisitions that allowed his Pittsburgh Penguins to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. Shero won the cup in 2009 as general manager of the Penguins.
Rich Peverley, a former Saint captain, was part of the blockbuster trade that sent him and Tyler Seguin plus a prospect to the Dallas Stars, for Loui Eriksson and several prospects. Peverley played a pivotal role in the Bruins run to the Cup in 2011. Peverley started in the NHL with the Nashville Predators, before being traded to the Atlanta Thrashers and later the Bruins. His best year came with Atlanta in 2009-2010, when he played in 82 games, and posted 22 goals and 33 assists for 55 points.
