It was announced today that former St. Lawrence goaltender Jacques Martin would join Tony Granato and Todd Reirdon as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Martin played for St. Lawrence from 1972-74, but never played in the NHL.
Martin was the head coach of the St. Louis Blues before being an assistant with the Quebec Nordiques, and stayed on when they moved to Colorado, before becoming the head coach with the Ottawa Senators. With the Sens, he won three Northeast divisions titles, a Presidents Trophy, and the Jack Adams Award as best coach in 1999.
He later coached the Florida Panthers, and Montreal Canadiens, before being relieved of coaching duties midway through the 2011-2012 season.
In 17 years of coaching with 4 NHL teams, Martin has a record of 613-481-119-81 in 1294 games. during that team he won 4 division championships and earned 12 playoff berths.
Martin became the 9th coach in history to win 600 games, when he beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 on April 9, 2011.
